I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time with some dear friends of mine in the picturesque town of Breckenridge, CO, this past weekend. These are friends I've known for what really is a lifetime, and as such, I couldn't help but notice the changes in their skin. Over the course of 25 years, it's only natural to see some differences in appearance. However, what worried me deeply was realizing that these wonderful individuals were not taking care of their skin in a way that would allow their largest organ to support them throughout the rest of their lives.

Fortunately, it's never too late to make positive changes. One of the first steps we can take is to assess the condition of our skin and determine if any issues require medical attention.   2. Undress and Use a Mirror: Undress completely or wear minimal clothing to ensure all areas of your skin are accessible. Stand in front of a full-length mirror to examine your entire body.

  3. Examine Your Face and Scalp: Begin by inspecting your face, paying close attention to your forehead, nose, lips, ears, and the scalp. Use a handheld mirror or seek assistance to examine hard-to-reach areas.

  4. Check Your Upper Body: Continue the examination by inspecting your neck, shoulders, chest, and underarms. Women should also lift their breasts to examine the skin underneath.

  5. Focus on Your Arms and Hands: Observe the skin on your upper arms, elbows, forearms, and hands. Don't forget to check between your fingers and under your nails.

  6. Inspect Your Lower Body: Examine your lower back, abdomen, buttocks, and genital area. For the legs, start from the thighs and work your way down to your feet, including the soles and between the toes.

  7. Utilize a Handheld Mirror: Use a handheld mirror to examine areas that are difficult to see, such as the back of your neck, back, and behind your ears. Alternatively, ask a family member or friend to assist you.  Use your smartphone to take pictures to track changes.

  8. Don't Forget Your Scalp and Feet: Part your hair to inspect your scalp thoroughly. For your feet, check between the toes, soles, and toenails, looking for any abnormalities.

  9. Take Note and Seek Medical Advice: If you notice any changes, take notes and/or pictures to help track the progression. Consult a dermatologist promptly for a professional evaluation.

Regularly checking your skin for changes is a simple yet crucial step in preventing serious skin diseases. By being vigilant and proactive, you can detect any potential issues early, improving your chances of successful treatment and minimizing complications. Remember to watch for signs such as new or changing moles, unusual growths, changes in pigmentation, skin lesions or sores, and itching or inflammation.
