Why Do ReVital-Eyes Drops Sting at First? What's Normal and How to Get Comfortable Fast
Aktie
If your first drops of ReVital-Eyes stung, you're not alone. It's the question I hear most, on TikTok, on our Thursday Zoom calls, and in my inbox. One customer told me it felt like getting shampoo in her eyes. The short answer: for most people, the sting comes from how dry the eye surface already is, and it eases as your eyes get used to regular moisture, usually within the first several drops and the first few days.
Here's what's going on, what's normal, what isn't, and exactly how to get through the first week comfortably.
Why does ReVital-Eyes sting when I first start?
ReVital-Eyes is a simple formula: distilled water, Celtic salt saline, 2% hyaluronic acid and organic vegetable glycerin. There's nothing harsh in it. So why the sting?
Most of my customers are over 40, and many are over 50. Between age, screens, air conditioning, heating and wind, most of us live with eyes that are far drier than we realize. Dry mouth sends us straight for a glass of water, but dry eyes don't send such a clear signal. We just squint, blink harder, or reach for a quick rewetting drop and move on.
When the surface of the eye has been dry for a long time, it tends to be more sensitive, and a drop with real moisturizing ingredients can sting or burn for a moment. In my experience, the drier your eyes, the stronger that first sting. That's also why people with contacts, long screen days, or a history of dry, gritty eyes often notice it most.
Is the stinging normal, and should I keep using it?
A brief sting that fades within a minute or so, followed by eyes that feel cool and comfortable, is the experience most customers describe, especially during the first few days. Many people tell me their eyes actually feel better once the sting passes.
What you should expect over time:
- The first 4 or 5 drops are usually the hardest.
- By around the 6th drop, most people notice the sting is much milder.
- After a few days of regular use, it's typically a quick, light tingle, or nothing at all.
I've thought about a hundred ways to make it sting less, but every version I tried made the drop less effective. So it stays the way it is, and the routine below is how we make the first week easier.
How do I get past the sting faster?
It sounds backwards, but the answer is to use ReVital-Eyes more at the beginning, not less. Using it often helps your eyes keep up with the moisture instead of falling behind.
- Load up for the first 3 days. Use 1 drop in each eye about every 10 minutes, 6 times in one hour, in the morning and again in the evening, before you add your 30/70 or other blend.
- Close your eyes and wait it out. Don't rub. Just close your eyes and let the drop spread until the sting passes.
- Get ahead of dryness. If you're still stinging after the first week, pick one day, like a Saturday, and do 6 drops in an hour, 2 or 3 times that day. Think of it like a bucket with a slow leak: fill it to the top, then keep topping it off.
- Use it any time. ReVital-Eyes can be used as often as you like throughout the day, not just before your other drops.
- Keep it in the refrigerator after opening to keep the natural ingredients fresh.
Why do my 30/70 or 40/60 drops sting or blur my vision?
Our DMSO and castor oil blends can also tingle, especially if your eyes are dry, which is one more reason to put ReVital-Eyes in first. Use ReVital-Eyes, wait until your eyes clear (usually a couple of minutes), then use your blend.
Castor oil is thick, so it's normal for vision to be a little blurry for a few minutes after an oil-based drop while it spreads across the eye. That's also why we ask contact lens wearers to wait 30 minutes after a DMSO blend before putting lenses in. ReVital-Eyes on its own doesn't affect contacts, but it isn't a rewetting drop: take the lens out, use your drop, then put the lens back in.
When is stinging NOT normal?
Please stop using the drops and contact your eye doctor if you have any of the following:
- Pain that is severe or doesn't fade within a few minutes
- Redness or irritation that gets worse over several days instead of better
- Swelling, discharge, or sensitivity to light
- Any sudden change in your vision
Our drops are meant to be used alongside care from your eye doctor, not instead of it. If you're being treated for an eye condition, have had recent eye surgery, or use prescription eye drops, check with your eye doctor before adding anything new.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the ReVital-Eyes sting last?
Usually less than a minute per drop. For most people it eases noticeably within the first 6 drops and within the first few days of regular use.
Does the sting mean the drop is working?
The sting is a sign of how dry your eyes are, not a measure of how well a product works. As your eyes get used to regular moisture, the sting should fade.
Can I use ReVital-Eyes if I wear contacts?
Yes. Take your lenses out, use ReVital-Eyes, and then put them back in. If you also use a DMSO blend, wait 30 minutes after that blend before inserting contacts.
